Thought this might interest you SCLC Leadership Heading to Israel to Open Conflict-Resolution Center ATLANTA (February 22, 2005) - Earlier today, President and CEO of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Charles Steele, Jr., departed for Israel to open The Institute for a New Humanity - from Chaos to Community, a conflict-resolution center in Dimona, Israel, with the African Hebrew Israelite Community. Steele is traveling with several members of the SCLC board of directors to inaugurate the center that is predicated on the principles espoused by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the practices of the Dimona-based community led by anointed spiritual leader, Ben Ammi. "Dr. King was an international icon among activists for human rights and champion of non-violent tactics in pursuit of social and spiritual change," declares President Steele. "During a visit to Israel as part of a congressional delegation in September 2004, I saw King's vision in practice among the daily lives of the Hebrew Israelites in Dimona," continues Steele. "Now it is time for SCLC to codify King's ideals and Ben Ammi's works." The Hebrew Israelites are approximately 2,500 African Americans tracing their heritage to the ancient Israelites of the Bible. They have resided in Israel some 36 years and their settlement in Dimona is also known as The Village of Peace, renowned for its holistic, spiritually-based lifestyle. They have become a haven for visitors from all walks of life, from around the world - including many internationally known personalities, like pop superstar Whitney Houston and Winnie Mandela. The Institute for a New Humanity -- from Chaos to Community will offer courses, counseling and training in resolving differences within families, and between communities, faiths and nations. The premise of the institute is based upon the principles, which inspired Dr. King and fueled the development of The Village of Peace, and will provide the state of Israel with a platform of leadership development in today's ever-changing world. In the wake of the Israeli government's recent negotiations with the Palestinian Authority at Sharm-El Sheik, coordinators see possibilities for an expanding role in bringing stability to the region. The SCLC delegation will arrive in Israel tomorrow, February 23, 2005. The dedication ceremony for the institute will be held 11 a.m. on February 27, 2005, at the School of the Prophets Institute, an independent collegiate-level/continuing adult education center in the Hebrew Israelite settlement. Steele said that the delegation will also continue to lay the groundwork for a peace pilgrimage of 5,000 African Americans to Israel in 2007. According to Steele, this too was a dream of Dr. King's, who in 1967, sent his aide, Andrew Young, to Israel and Jordan to prepare for the visit. But the outbreak of the Six-Day War and King's assassination the following year thwarted those plans. "The establishment of the conflict resolution institute in Dimona is a sign of hope for all humanity," says Steele. "This is happening at a time of great change!" he continues. "The title of Dr. King's last book was ?Where Do We Go from Here - Chaos to Community,'" says Prince Immanuel Ben-Yehuda, a spokesman for the Hebrew Israelites.
